Competition Muzha Tieguanyin

From the same garden of our perennial favorite Dragon's Eye Charcoal Muzha Tieguanyin, this tea was entered into the 2024 Muzha Tieguanyin Tea Competition. While it didn't win first place, it is a great example of the classic taste of Muzha Tieguanyin that has 'fallen out of favor' for the judges of the Muzha competition. This means we get to try some at a more affordable price compared to other competition teas, which is OK with us!

Produced agrochemical free on a small garden just outside of downtown Taipei, this Tieguanyin is made from the Jinxuan cultivar and was thought to be the best production run of the 2024 spring season by our friends. Before being entered into the competition, the stems and yellow leaves where meticulously removed giving this brew a smoothness worthy of the judges.

This year the flavor is a fascinating! Over the usual character of the Muzha Tieguanyin style of production, the typical fruit flavor of a higher oxidized Jinxuan is roasted to bring out a flavor note that seems to us to taste a little like 'grilled blueberries'. It seems like a winner to us!

*The 300g option comes in a sealed competition box containing a 'can' sealed cylinder with a single 300g vacuum sealed bag of tea. If we sell out out of the boxes but you are still interested in getting one, let us know and we might be able to to help you get your hands on one!

A Standout

I purchased this shortly after release, splurged on the can knowing it will age gracefully. At first, this tea while delicious, smooth, rich velvet, and yes. Grilled blueberries is a legitimate tasting note. It was a little intense, in the smell and aftertaste you could tell it had more nuance in there. Nearly a year later I broke out my original tasting notes and had a session with it. All that nuance is there and lovely. It's truly balanced out into a tea I break out on either the best or worst of days. One to sit with and get to know. I'm glad I have plenty for some time to come. *if you're struggling with liking this tea look into your water. I find that the heavier roast teas are a little water finicky.
