House Roast Wild Garden Honey Oolong

A happy accident, this tea has a long history. A rich, thick, full bodied and traditional tea, it is a great tea to practice roasting skills!  Liu Gui, the area when this tea is grow, used to be a large source of tea for the Taiwanese tea industry before the local market turned to high mountain tea. During that time, the varieties of teas planted were strong, robust and used for higher oxidization/roasted styles of teas. This tea is from that tradition and the tea trees are all over 50 years old. The heritage variety agrochemical free garden was abandoned for 10 years in the mid 2000s and has only been recently brought back online. It is kept in its wild state however, giving it its signature sweetness from all the leaf hopper bites!

We acquired this tea as a fun project tea in the fall of 2018 while on the search for local wild teas. When we bought it, it had a bit of staleness to it but we could see the potential if we could bring it back to life with some self roasting. We have worked away at it over the past couple months and were so surprised at the  outcome that we decided to share it! Honey comb, dark fruit, and strong earthy notes are in store for those who want to try and tame this thick, beautiful tea. Be fair warned however, use a light hand as this tea has some edges if you over brew it!
