A powerful fall tea from our partner farm on Lishan, this tea has quite the unique story and taste. The summer of 2018 was a hot one in the high mountains of Taiwan and something rather rare happened. The bugs moved up the valleys into the higher elevations and preceded to bite the heck out of the tea plants! Even at the elevations about 1800m, the green leaf hopper managed to get a taste of the succulent fall sprouts of this particular tea, giving it an incredibly rare 'honey fragrance' taste on a high mountain tea. Unfortunately, the thrips travelled too and their bites can also be found on this strong tea, hence the bitter in the title.
What we are left with is a tea with a strong upfront buttery high mountain vegetal, smooth honey sweet aftertaste, and a bite if brewed too strongly! It is a complex, fascinating tea, and one that might not be the best for those new to high mountain oolongs. For those with a skilled pour however, it is one of the most interesting and rewarding oolongs we have on the site. And at the price we got it for, a steal for those that love a challenge!
If you love the bite and power of young sheng puer and the soft, sweet vegetal of high mountain oolong(and wanted a tea that had both) this might be a new favorite!
