Mountain Stream Taiwanese Sheng

**We have acquired the 2019 spring pick of the old tree material for this year's Mountain Stream Taiwanese Sheng and it was a great year. We are looking forward to pressing the material into cakes once the maocha is ready sometime this summer. Last winter this tea sold out within one week of being released so we are now putting the Spring 2019 Mountain Stream Taiwanese Sheng into pre-sale for those that want to reserve a cake before it is all gone. Estimated shipping date is late August/Early September. Costs for pre-sale will be 32$ for a 100g cake and 60$ for a 200g cake. Prices will rise July 1st!**

A rumor that turned into reality, this tea is about as one-of-a-kind as they come. It has one of those 'too crazy to be true but verified with pictures' stories that have become all too common on our sourcing adventures. This tea is made from fresh tea material picked from wild 100-200 year old wild cultivar tea trees growing in the mountains of South Western Taiwan and then processed mirroring the Pu'er tea processing style of Yunnan, China. The finished product is something that is  new but familiar, and undeniably Taiwanese. The name Taiwanese Sheng fits it perfectly!

The taste profile is sweet, candied plums with a fresh feel as that you would get from a greenish high mountain oolong. The leaves are heavy and dense but the tea liquor is light and soft. There is a touch of young sheng pu'er bitterness if pushed too hard, but with 10-15 second infusions the tea unfolds in soft, sweet waves. Not a pu'er or an oolong, but something unique and special. We are immensely excited to see how this tea ages!

Grown by a multi generational tea farmer family in Liugui, Taiwan it has all the 'hipster' checkmarks that we need to have it as a long-term tea on the site. Mark, the main force behind this tea, just welcomed his first son into the world just a couple months ago!

Like no other sheng

This tea is amazing! It's nothing like any other yunnan sheng I've ever tried. It's so fruity and sweet it's just outrageous. The aroma reminds me of fruity candies mixed with some medicinal herb. It has a medium texture in the mouth! Overall a 5 star tea, for the price it has an amazing value!

THE YUMMY taste of Taiwan!!!

All the flavor notes I love in the old tree assamica black tea are in this but taken up a whole nother level!! At first smell of the wet leaf and taste of first infusion I was instantly reminded of the assamica black tea having recently had it. It's those fruity sweet raisin notes that I love but even sweeter and more fruity. Plum sweetness abounds! If this is the flavor of old tea trees in Taiwan then it is truly special! It's unlike any tea I've had in this style from other countries! I'm only about 4 steps in with 4 grams of leaf but had to post a review cause it is SO GOOD!!! Matt, thanks for sharing this tea with the world!

Unique.

So this was a purchase that was definitely worth the money. I'd probably cop a 200g cake next time this is released just on how good this was. The leaves were loosely pressed relative to other puerhs I've had before, so it's easy to pry some off to brew. The wet leaves smell of fruit and floral, and smells a little like a sheng puerh. The taste is a dominant, yet soft sweet fruit flavor. Its there through the first few brews of the session, on the palate and in a lasting aftertaste, along with some notes of sheng astringency and bitterness. Later steeps of the tea have more of that sheng flavor, followed by a little lingering sweetness.

I'd love to see how this ages. Good stuff.

Delicious First year Sheng

The Taiwanese Sheng puerh tea is truly one of a kind. Upon first brewing, it had a strong aroma of boiled beets and excellent fruit taste like a plum. The first five steeps had a constant potency and left one to want to drink more of it. After the six steep the tea took on a particular dry red wine flavor that was delightful. Towards the end of the steeping session, it tasted much like any ordinary black tea. Overall, I look forward to aging this tea and tasting the layers of flavor. I will certainly be paying attention to future Puerh teas from here.
