One for the cultivar nerds, this tea is made from the Fo Shou, or Buddha's Hand, cultivar know for it's large sized leaves. Originally from Fujian Province in China, it has always been seen as a 'niche' or novel kind of tea with a softer, lighter taste and very, very large leaves.
This particular tea was produced in the winter of 2019 at our Muzha partner farm and is the best tea of this cultivar we have ever found. Notoriously hard to produce into a nice tasting tea, the large size of the leaves make it very tough to achieve even oxidization. As this was a Dong Pian, or Snow Picked, tea, the mild temperatures of winter were perfect to control the oxidization of this high quality, certified organic batch of Fo Shou Oolong!
The taste of this cultivar is light, smooth, slightly vegetal and nothing special to write home about. (Hence the first line above :) When brewed right, however, there is a nice little minty menthol deep in the aftertaste of this tea that is very unique and reminiscent of a Ruby 18 White Tea. Perhaps not a daily drinker for everyone, it is worth a try to say that you have have had a Fo Shou Oolong at the next meeting of the tea nerds club...
